During the Regency period, new types of furniture were made, including buffets and servers. Regency servers were used in the kitchen to serve food straight from the cooker like sideboards. They were made in different styles, ranging from minimalist tables to fully-fledged sideboards. Apart from serving food, they were used to display and store serving dishes.
Today, you can find antique Regency servers for sale online and in-store. Regardless of where you find them, these furniture pieces remain as functional and elegant as they were more than a century ago. You can use them to decorate your home and serve many other purposes. But how do you identify antique Regency servers when you look for them?
Here is a simple, straightforward look to help you get the best of these furniture pieces:

During the Regency period, furnituremakers favored mahogany, one of the most readily available woods in Europe. Since it is one of the most durable hardwoods, mahogany became popular, even though other woods like rosewood and walnut were used. The antique regency servers made from mahogany are likely to be in good shape until now. That’s mainly because of the durable nature of mahogany. You would know you have a mahogany Regency server by looking at the straight grains in a reddish-brown wood.
During the Regency period, Europeans had made excursions to other continents and had discovered exotic woods, which could be used to make furniture. Thus, zebrawood, rosewood, and ebony were used to make high-end servers, buffets, and sideboards. The furniture surfaces were highly polished to enhance the wood grain and create furniture pieces to behold.
In previous eras – like gothic, extravagant, and Chippendale – furniture was heavily embellished and had elaborate carvings. Furniture makers in the Regency period sought to steer clear of that, opting for simpler furniture pieces. At this time, the Regency server emerged as an alternative to the larger Chippendale cabinets. Generally, Regency furniture was symmetrical and had clean lines and right angles.

Of course, furniture makers during the Regency period didn’t pay much attention to creating elaborate decorations. But that doesn’t mean that antique Regency servers were completely flat and tasteless. Most of them had saber legs and Greek-influenced scrollwork. Although there were wood carvings, they were more subtle than those from the earlier period. Regency artisans used carvings to accent the furniture’s refined shapes, unlike in previous periods when furniture makers made detailed wood carvings. Popular motifs included acanthus leaves, lyres, and animal heads.
It has already been stated that artisans during the Regency period favored dark woods. This created the perfect background for applying decorations such as metal accents. Most of these furniture pieces have brass inlays and fixtures. In some cases, a later of gold was applied to the brass to create an even more elegant finish.
