Center tables help provide a surface to keep books, snacks, and other items. They are also helpful in helping you get enough rest at home and complement your home’s aesthetic appeal.
You can choose between modern and antique furniture when buying a center table. While modern center tables can look great in any room, antique center tables are valuable, complementing your home’s aesthetic appeal.
But how do you ensure that the antique table you buy is genuine? The simple answer is to examine the furniture piece closely before purchasing it. The following are some of the things you ought to look for:

Under the table surface, you will likely find the most significant clues on whether or not an antique center table is genuine. Furniture pieces made before 1860 had their parts cut using handsaws and smoothed with hand planes.
Therefore, the underside of the table surface will likely be rough with tool marks and plane scrapes. Such antique center tables are likely to be at least 150 years old.
You would expect the antique furniture feet to match in size and shape. However, for handmade furniture pieces, the pieces might not fit perfectly. If they do, they are likely to be machine-made, which indicates the furniture piece might not be an antique.
So, what should you look for? Various features can help you know whether you have matching parts. Look out for the following:
Tool marks
Slight variance in shapes and size
Elongated round parts
Antique center tables are likely made from walnut, cherry, mahogany, and oak. Furniture made before 1700 mainly featured oak between 1700 and 1800 mahogany and 1800 to 1900 cherry and maple. From 1900 onwards, oak was the most popular wood. So, you must be sure of the wood used to make your center table.
The screws and nails used on antiques are nothing like the ones you can buy today. The earliest nails and screws were handmade. So, if you find a center table with modern screws, it is unlikely to be an antique. It is likely machine-made and not as valuable as you wish.
Authentic antique furniture pieces should have manufacturer burn marks or distressed stamps. Once you know the maker of a furniture piece, it’s easier to tell when it was made and whether it’s a genuine antique. If an item lists a builder’s complete address, including a ZIP code, it’s unlikely to be a genuine antique. Instead, it is a recent center table that isn’t more than 50 years old.
