Carlton House Desk Regency Circa 1880 Satinwood

Hollywood Regency refers to an interior decor style that emerged in California, United States, in the 1930s. It was primarily inspired by the glitz and glamour cinematic representations that had sprung up around that time. The style coincided with the Golden Age of cinema from the 1920s to the 1950s when artisans build film sets to look good on camera. It pays attention to detailed finishes, texture, colour, detail, and composition. Also known as Regency Moderne, the style sought to update the earlier interiors of the Regency period.

Once they were done with the movies, directors, actors, and interior designers took the style to their own homes. With time, the film-going masses also wanted to make their homes look glamorous as what they saw on the screen. When movie stars gave interviews, it was against the backdrop of their movie-set-ready private residences. In the process, they created a larger-than-life image that made everyone else want to be like them. Examples of movie stars during that era include Marlene Dietrich, Gloria Swanson, Joan Crawford, and Carol Lombard. By exquisitely decorating their homes, they propagated a sense of Hollywood glamour and mystique.

Hollywood Regency emerged at a time when Art Deco was at the peak of its popularity. However, it retained its distinctiveness, remaining one of the most enduring interior decor styles of the 20th century. Today, the style still appeals to maximalists, never having become unfashionable. It remains a significant influence on contemporary artists and homeowners alike. However, many opt to pick a few elements, such as mirrored furniture, to introduce the style into their homes, albeit minimal.

Characteristics of Hollywood Regency Style

Interiors focussing on comfort, luxury, and glamour

The use of playful, luxurious, glamourous, and naughty details

Embracing maximalism with textured, layered finishes and design elements

Metallic and mirrored furniture finishes with decorative objects, wallpaper, and other wall treatments

The use of vibrant colour and contrasting, vivid patterns for striking pairings

A signature black and white contrast

Lacquered and high-gloss walls, ceilings, and furniture surfaces

The focus is more on the styling and accessories rather than furniture

Uses scaled-down furniture whose profiles have been slimmed down

Luxe accents like fur, velvet, and silk

It brings out old-school eclecticism and elegance

May feature rococo-style or rococo-inspired furniture like skirted sofas, slipper chairs, and curvy velvet upholstered armchairs

Application of chinoiserie such as faux bamboo on chairs and room dividers as part of the interior decor

How to Decorate Using Hollywood Regency Style

Regency Dining Table and Set of Chippendale Chairs in Mahogany

While decorating with Hollywood Regency style, you may want to keep walls, floors, and ceilings neutral. After that, you can add a few glamorous touches but in a way that makes it easier to swap them. For example, you may use a modern or vintage sunburst mirror to decorate your bedroom, living room, and so on. Add a few mirrored furniture pieces, including a dresser or bedside table. You may also use gold or gilded accents, black-and-white elements, animal prints, lacquered accessories, or a crystal chandelier.

You can find many of these elements from our antique store!
