Pair Regency Convex Mirrors Eagle Carved Girandole

Convex Regency eagle mirrors are highly decorative items that can transform any space within your home. The mirrors are mounted on gilt wood frames that render them beautiful to the core. They may have eagle features on their frames.

However, before going into a detailed description of these mirrors, it’s critical to look at furniture and art pieces during the Regency period in general. The Regency period lasted from the late 1790s to the 1830s. In 1811, Prince George of Wales became Regent over Britain when his father, King George III, could no longer reign because of insanity.

Later on, Prince George of Wales became King George IV and reigned in Britain until his death in 1830. Regency style is part of the larger Georgian style. It led to the production of different types of furniture and decorate items like clocks, mirrors, statues, paintings, etc.

Several designers were involved in creating beautiful convex Regency eagle mirrors and other furniture pieces. They included the following:

Thomas Sheraton

Henry Holland

Thomas Hope

Thomas Sheraton and Henry Holland tended to borrow heavily from previous periods. However, it was hope who first introduced the use of classical influences in creating items such as eagle mirrors. He was the first person to use the term ‘interior decor’. Regency style was more subdued than baroque and rococo styles.

The following were the main features of Regency furniture and other items:

Detailed wood marquetry, carvings, and metal ornamentation

Details such as carved scrollwork, palmettos, and sphinxes

Materials included reddish-brown mahogany, ebony, and zebrawood

Description of Convex Regency Eagle Mirrors

Convex Regency eagle mirrors are mostly round-shaped and come in different sizes. Some are small enough to capture only part of your face while others are large and can be hang in the dressing room or bathroom.

But the mirror size isn’t the main differentiating factor. These mirrors are made using wood frames with different decorations. Therefore, when buying a convex Regency eagle mirror, you should look more at the highly decorated frame.

The following are the features you’ll find on most of these mirrors:

Moulded frames with ball decorations

Ebonized inner slip

Eagle cresting sitting on a reeded and tapered plinths. Sometimes, the eagle had outstretched wings spreading on either side of the plinths.

Scrolling acanthus leaves and leaf-carved aprons

Gilt decorated candle arms, crystal bobeche, and some cut crystal prisms

Wood frames with hand-carved arched sections pieced together to create a circular frame

Thin secondary glistening gilt wood frames

Ship floorboard back panels

Regency eagle mirrors are elegant because of the designs implemented on the wood frames. They are made from various materials, including the mirrors, wood frames, gilt, and lacquer. Some of the mirrors are available for sale in their original forms. Some may have signs of restoration. Still, there are several reproduction mirrors out there.

The Bottom Line

Convex Regency eagle mirrors are desirable items that can help you to decorate your home. Besides the obvious round mirrors, they have highly embellished wood frames. They are also available in different shapes and sizes.
