Hobbs and Company if a furniture manufacturer established in England in the mid-19th century. It is famous for producing some of the most iconic antiques on the market today. Even though they used machinery in their productions, the company made their furniture pieces with intricate details and meticulous care.

The furniture by Hobbs & Co was mainly made of high-quality wood and details that made it unique and desirable. That’s why Hobbs and Company furniture is on high demand across the world. Luckily, it is available in generalized or dedicated antique shops in the UK, US, and Australia.

Antique dealers have large variety of Hobbs & Co. antique furniture, making it possible for you to choose one that best meets your needs. They include the following:

This kind of pedestal desk has a unique design that makes it possible to close it off and conceal the contents of the drawers. Whenever there’s the need to use the desktop or writing surface, all that’s required is rolling back the cylinder.

It was made from solid wood with a slated wood rolltop. Besides, it stands on two pedestals of drawers. The number of drawers may vary based on the designer and the needs of the user. You can keep important documents and books in these drawers.

2. Hobbs & Company Pedestal Desk

Pedestal desks were in vogue in Victorian Britain with some of the best items being released by Hobbs & Co. around 1880. While the materials differed, pedestal desks were mostly made from walnut, mahogany, oak, etc.

The solid wood construction made the pedestal sturdy and unshakable. Besides the drawer under the desktop and in the leg space, the desk had drawer pedestals for extra storage. The metallic drawer handles are convenient for opening and closing the drawers.

3. Hobbs and Company Military Campaign Chest of Drawers

The military used campaign furniture to carry supplies when out fighting the enemy. Life other furniture makers in the 18th and 19th century, Hobbs and Company made durable military campaign furniture.

Military campaign chests of drawers were dismountable via removal of wooden screws. With that, it was possible to reduce them to manageable sizes before getting ferried using animals or on ships. In the case of Hobbs & Co. campaign chests, the furniture pieces broke into two.

Origin of Hobbs and Company

Hobbs & Co. originated in London in 1851 when American born Alfred Charles Hobbs partnered with a local called Ashley. The company made some of the best furniture pieces around that time. It was one of the first machine-based furniture manufacturers in the UK and around the world.

The company changed names to Hobbs, Ashley & Co in 1855; Hobbs, Ashley & Fortescue; and Hobbs, Hart & Co. in 1860. When Ashley died, Hobbs sold the business to John Mathias Hart who build it into a thriving, profitable business.

The Bottom Line

Hobbs and Company is one of the most successful manufacturers of antique furniture. It was established in the early days of the Victorian era and created beautiful, durable furniture. Some of their antiques are the best.
