William IV Antiques
In the 1800s, the Rococo and Gothic style furniture was revived in most parts of the world. You may want to call it Victorian Furniture but anything made between 1830 and 1837 will fall in the category of William IV antiques. If you are looking for these furniture pieces in an antique auction, it is important to know the unique characteristics to focus on. You don’t have to be a seasoned antique dealer to get it right. Here are steps to follow when identifying genuine William IV antiques:
1. Emblems or Motifs
Most furniture pieces made in the 1800s had motifs or emblems carved into them. As such, you would see images of mythological creatures, trophies, lions, torches, laurel leaves, and crowns. The legs were elaborately carved and some head features such as spades, clubs, and lions’ paws. That’s because William IV antiques borrowed greatly from the preceding Chippendale furniture.
2. The Furniture’s Hardware
Every piece of furniture has its own unique hardware. These mainly differed according to the period when the furniture was made. Due to their English origins, William IV antiques are likely to feature hardware in the form of bronze and brass. Pieces with Gothic Revival and Rococo Revival styles may also feature a decoration guild. 3. Look at the Feet of the Furniture Pieces
You can tell if you are looking at genuine William IV antiques simply by looking at the feet. Furniture made in England during the time of King William IV mainly featured square feet. This was the time when Chippendale style furniture was in vogue. This type of foot is also known as the Marlborough foot, given that it was found on Marlborough legs, which are straight in nature.
4. Check the Legs of the Furniture Pieces
Most of the William IV antiques featured cabriole legs, which were a major part of the Chippendale furniture of that period. The legs looked more like outward curving knees with an inward curving ankle. As for the foot, it was a decorative affair, mainly featuring lion claws. But not every furniture with this kind of feet was produced during the William IV period. Some are mere mass reproductions of the older style furniture. You have to be very careful to ensure you only buy genuine William IV antiques.
5. Check the Back of the Furniture
Of course, the furniture pieces with backs are the chairs. The furniture pieces created during the period of King William IV had intricate chair backs. These furniture featured several themes including the Greek classic, Chinese, and English styles. The backs would have bold or delicate carvings. Those which didn’t have carved backs had ballooning affairs. With these features, you should be able to find the right William IV antiques.
Once you are able to find the right pieces of William IV antique furniture, you should be able to take good care of them. Make sure you don’t pay too much for a piece of antique furniture. The key to ensuring that the furniture piece you are paying for comes from the right period of history.
