Pair Georgian Terracotta Urns - Garden Vase on Pedestal

( Above Photo: Pair Georgian Terracotta Urns - Garden Vase on Pedestal )

Are you looking for large antique terracotta urns? These vessels are great for use as planters and as garden ornaments. You could place one inside the house or in the garden. The following are some of the available antique terracotta urns:

1. Italian Antique Terracotta Urns

Original Italian antique terracotta urns often had an accompanying iron stand. These urns were for transporting olive oil around the Mediterranean region. On its original form, the jar would have a beautifully aged patina and some moss.

The jars were created in an easy-to-carry horizontal cross-hatch design with two handles. Since people no longer use them to carry olive oil, it would serve well for growing plants in the garden or inside the house. Most of these urns originated in Italy from 1850 to 1900.

Some Italian terracotta urns were glazed, featuring muted colors with detailed motifs. Some of the common motifs includes lion head and horses, which acted as handles. They are great for the outdoors and indoors.

2. English Antique Terracotta Urns

Terracotta urns were made in the United Kingdom for centuries, which is why you’ll likely find great antiques originating here. Some of those created in the late 19th century had attached plinth based to enable them to stand easily in gardens and inside homes. They were mostly composed of three sections – the plinth, stem, and bowl.

While some will likely have the original, patinated terracotta, others were painted white for placement in the garden. Having interacted with the elements, these terracotta urns will likely have a green appearance due to the growth of moss.

3. Spanish Antique Terracotta Urns

Spain is also another region in which large antique terracotta urns were made. Like their Italian counterparts, the Spaniards used large terracotta urns to transport olive oil. While some of the urns have plain terracotta surfaces, others are glazed.

The glazed urns could have shades of blue together with a natural aged patina. They are beautiful antique pieces that would work perfectly well in the garden and inside the house. One such urn is 53.34 cm (height) by 35.36 cm (diameter) in dimensions.

Most of the available terracotta urns from Spain were made in the mid-19th-century and should be in good condition when you buy them. By giving them good care, you can expect to use them in your garden or inside your house for ages.

4. French Antique Terracotta Urns

The French region of Biot, Alpes-Maritimes was the center of the country’s pottery industry from the 18th century. Therefore, many of the large antique terracotta urns made in France at that time will likely be from this region.

While some of the urns had plan cured terracotta surfaces, others were glazed to make them smoother. Featuring cylindrical or oval bodies, the urns are great to use as indoor planters, fountains, and garden ornaments.

The pots might have different shapes and sizes but are good for indoor and outdoor use. You could place one inside the house, the garden, or conservatory. Since they are antique pots, they will likely be worn out in some areas.

The Bottom Line

There are many different types of large antique terracotta urns you could purchase from a store near you. They were created in different places are will likely have different features. Always check the pot in greater detail to be sure you’re getting something you deserve.
