At Canonbury Antiques we carry a range of refectory table dining sets - these are perfect for achieving that cosy farmhouse look in your kitchen or home. If you read interior design magazines you will know that this classic English farmhouse look is very popular right now and we have multiple table and chair combinations available.
Nothing beats a classic oak refectory table for an enduring and reliable piece of furniture. As they are made from solid oak they are very chunky and stable and will easily endure the vigours of daily family life. We have noticed a few of our clients even like the oak tables over some of our more formal dining options - Victorian and Regency dining tables - as they are able to witstand the knocks and scrapes a bit more.
The classic refectory table stems from the Middle Ages when they were first used in abbeys and convents by monks to sit around and eat dinner as well as perhaps knocking back the odd pint of Trappist ale. Indeed the word refectory refers to a room use for communal meals particuarly in religions or educational institutions. Obviously chosing the right refectory table dining set is very important as this piece of furniture will last for generations hence making it a great investment. Hence we have multiple chair options on site so you can try all the different chairs around the table to find the right one for comfort and style. Popular options include ladderback chairs, spindlebacks, the reliable Windsor chair, Mary Tudor, Gothic, ladderbacks and Elizabethan styles depending on taste and budget.
Our main range of refectory table dining sets would be English in origin, but we do carry a number of French and Spanish tables. We do also have some round refectory tables to accommodate a different sized room or apartment. Many of our customers prefer a round dining table as it can provide a more intimate dining experience as guests all sit around in a circle. We also have extending refectory tables which are useful if you plan on hosting bigger dinner parties in your home and can store the extra leaves away when not needed.
The classic refectory table will have two or three planks to the top for the main table top which is thick (perhaps 2-3 inches) and solid. Frequently the tables can be transported easier by the fact the table top comes off the base. The legs will be hand turned and bulbous to adequately support the top. One of our popular French tables has hand carved legs which looks very rustic.
