Bureau de Roi - French roll top desk

Every home office needs a desk on which the work will be done. It doesn’t matter if you need one for your studies or professional work. You should choose a piece of furniture that will serve you for a long time to come. Apart from the functionality, choose a desk that’s pleasant to work with. In days gone by, people relied on roll top desks but these pieces of furniture seem to be making a comeback. With a roll top desk, it is easy to use a laptop.

What Is A Roll Top Desk?

Empire roll top desk

Roll top desks are designed to have a number of stacked compartments, drawers, nooks, and shelves. They were previously known as pedestal desks and were originally supplied Carlton House. The name “roll top” comes from the fact that the desk has several compartments and nooks which are covered by a roll-back tambour. The tambour is made using several wooden slats which are linked together. The design was inspired by the eighteen century cylinder desks.

What Was A Roll Top Desk Historically Used For?

Intricate inlay work on this roll top desk

After the American Civil War, most offices featured roll back desks. It was not until the Second World War and depression when the desks began to fall out of favor due to the introduction of steel desks. At that time, mailed correspondence became an integral part of office work. Thus, it was no longer necessary to have the stacked drawers, nooks, and shelves of these desks. The paperwork in offices was too much that it was cumbersome to fold and hold it in the tiny spaces.

Are Roll Top Desks In Use Today?

Among antique dealers and collectors, roll top desks are still a stock-in-trade. At the time when these desks were popular, they were mostly mass produced. Thus it is possible to find a wide range of models as well as quality levels. Undoubtedly, many of these desks are still sitting in homes and office buildings waiting to be discovered. The price of each piece depends on the type of wood that was used to make it. However, you should be able to find something that fits within your budget.

What Is The Price Of A Roll Top Desk?

Since these are mostly antique desks, their prices will depend on the period in which they were widely used. Also important is the state of the actual piece, the sale or auction format, and its condition. If the desk has undergone substantial work during restoration, then that may also contribute to the price.

In case you are not interested in an antique piece, then you can buy any of the pieces being produced by modern furniture makers. The price of a new roll top desk is dictated by its size and material used to make it. The price range is between $200 and $2,000. Add onto that the assembly, handling, and shipping costs and you will have a rough idea of how much you ought to pay.

Reasons to Buy a Roll Top Desk

Buy a roll top desk for your home office if you want a down-to-earth piece of furniture you can use with modern technological tools such as laptops. To neutralize the ambiance created by many electronic devices, get for yourself a good wooden desk. Each day when you are through with your work, you can draw back the roll top and wait to start again the next morning.
