Choosing the right antique dining table is about balancing scale, comfort and period style.

Whether you are furnishing a formal dining room with a large Regency pedestal table or a cosy Victorian breakfast room, getting the proportions right is essential.

As a general rule, allow around 60cm / 24 inches per person for comfortable seating.

Larger Regency and Victorian dining chairs with carved arms or upholstered seats may require a little extra room.

Regency Dining Tables

Regency dining tables are known for their elegant proportions, pedestal bases and impressive scale.

Many Regency examples feature twin pedestal supports with brass lion paw feet, allowing generous legroom and flexible seating.

6 ft / 183cm Regency pedestal table
Seats 6 people comfortably.

8 ft / 244cm Regency extending dining table
Seats 8 people comfortably.

10 ft / 305cm large Regency dining table
Seats 10-12 people.

Large Regency tables were designed for entertaining and work particularly well in formal interiors with a full set of Regency dining chairs.

Victorian Dining Tables

Victorian dining tables are often heavier and more substantial in appearance than earlier Regency examples.

Popular forms include wind-out extending tables with multiple leaves, allowing the table to expand for large dinner parties.

4 ft / 122cm Victorian breakfast table
Seats 4 people.

6 ft / 183cm Victorian wind-out table
Seats 6-8 people.

8 ft / 244cm Victorian extending dining table
Seats 8-10 people.

12 ft / 366cm large Victorian banquet table
Seats 12 people comfortably.

Victorian tables are ideal for larger family dining rooms and traditional country house interiors.

Room Size & Spacing

Allow at least 90cm / 36 inches clearance around the table for chairs and movement.

If using carver chairs at the heads of the table, particularly large Victorian or Regency armchairs, allow additional space.

Extending antique dining tables remain one of the most practical choices for period homes, giving flexibility for both everyday dining and larger gatherings.
