Silver Plate lazy susans

Are you looking for a Silver Plate Lazy Susan? It is a fancy way of serving dishes to your guests without having to stretch and reach items that might be far off. But that doesn’t mean that it is anything new. It was used in the 19th-century to serve dishes to guests in palaces and royal courts. Many of these were made with smooth rotating mechanisms akin to today’s ball bearings.

Sheffield Silver Plate lazy susan

What is a silver plate lazy Susan? It is basically a rotating tray or turntable that sits atop a table or counter to help serve food more easily. Usually circular, the lazy Susan sits centrally on a circular table so that diners can easily access the dishes. It may also be referred to as a Dumb Waiter.

When you come to us, we will avail you a silver tray in good condition. Despite the fact that it would have lasted several centuries, the silver plate will hardly look worn out. While there is likely to be surface scuffing and slightly rippled edges, these will be very minimal. You can easily tell you are dealing with an antique item simply by looking at how much it has undergone wear and tear.

Victorian silver plate lazy susan

The silver plate lazy Susan was popular during the Victorian era. That’s why the antiques on the market today are likely to fall in that category. While some were made of copper, most of them would be silver plated. In other words, silver would be used to cover the main copper plate.

Mostly, they featured four entrée dishes with lids, two salt shakers, two paper shakers, and tureen with a lid in the centre. Silverplate lazy Susan would be made by hand even though some in the Victorian era were mass-produced.
What are the origins of a lazy Susan?

In the 1750s, people in England were witnessing a revolution with silent machines replacing the overzealous house servant. Soon, this device that revolved around the dinner table was christened “Lazy Susan”. At that time, a Lazy Susan was nothing but a wheeled serving tray which was first made and used in France.

Truthfully, the term “Lazy Susan” was coined in the United States in the early 20th-century. The rotating trays used to serve food in the previous century was largely referred to as the “dumb waiter”. All this for the same reason that no human servant was required to serve food around the table.
