Back in July 2022 we did a mini Grand Tour of Italy visiting Rome, Florence and Venice in one week. Phew - yes it was very hot, incredibly busy and quite intense - we must have walked fifteen miles a day. The trip was incredible and the fruits of it will be shared on the website over time in the form of photos and videos. We definitely got our fill of classical antiquity and visiting Florence - a temple to the Renaissance - was a highlight. Of course, a visit to the Uffizi Gallery was top of our list when in Florence and we spent a day wandering in its hallways and domed galleries marvelling at the collection of art and sculptures from classical antiquity.
Uffizi Gallery Florence is one of Italy’s oldest and most visited museums, with a vast collection of irresistible masterpieces. The items on display in the museum are part of the collection left behind by the Medici family. As the Medici family collected the art pieces, they kept them in the Uffizi building, which became a museum in later years. The building displays sculptures and paintings between the middle Ages and the Renaissance.

History of Uffizi Gallery Florence
In 1560, the 1st Grand Duke of Tuscany commissioned the Uffizi Gallery as Florence’s legislative and administrative offices. The word Uffizi is the Italian form of ‘office.’
The U-shaped structure resembles a streetscape and has a long corridor ending at River Arno. There’s a screen where you can have a good view of Ponte Vecchio.
Architect Georgio Vasari designed the building to include a unique corridor that runs over Ponte Vecchio and connects Uffizi and the Pitti Palace.

The Medici family used the building as an office and housed their art collection on the top floor from 1581. As the collection grew, they divided the top floor into several rooms to properly store the art pieces.
The collection remained in the Medici Family until 1743 when Anna Maria Luisa de Medici signed a family pact bequeathing everything to the Tuscany state. There was a guarantee that not a single piece of art would ever leave Florence.
In 1769, the state opened the museum, albeit with part of the Medici art collection. Some pieces were moved to other Florence museums. The building was expanded to create more storage room for the vast collection of art pieces.
