Piece Description

A handsome pair of traditional toleware bouillotte lamps, dating to the early 20th century and inspired by the elegant French bouillotte lamps of the Louis XVI period
Each lamp stands on a circular cast brass base with three scrolling candle arms supporting simulated candle sconces with faux ivory sleeves
Bought from a dealer on Marche Biron at the Paris antiques market
The distinctive adjustable metal shade, finished in a rich oxblood red with gilt decorative borders, is fitted with a central finial and can be raised or lowered to control the direction and intensity of light
This practical feature originated in the late 18th century, when bouillotte lamps were used to illuminate card tables during games of bouillotte in fashionable French salons
