Carlton House

The term 'Carlton House' has become a popular phrase to describe a writing table with a low superstructure that encloses the sides of the writing area as well as the back. The Prince of Wales, later George IV, commissioned a table of this model in the 1790s for Carlton House. Carlton House was a large palace near Whitehall in London that sadly no longer exists.
