Fine quality Victorian burr walnut davenport carvings on the lower uprights
Finished with a red tooled leather
Circa 1840
The name "Davenport desk" comes from Captain Davenport, for whom the first example was commissioned by the furniture maker Gillows of Lancaster in the late 18th century Davenport desks are compact writing desks characterized by a slanted lifting top and side drawers, originally designed in the late 18th century for naval officers Their elegant form and practical storage make them a popular choice among antique furniture collectors
