Art Deco Furniture
At Canonbury Antiques we are great fans of the art deco era and have a wide range of art deco furniture, much of it on display in our Hertfordshire antiques showroom. Though the style took its name from 'L’Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes', held in Paris in 1925 it initially began to emerge during the 1910’s reaching its height during the roaring 1920’s. The art deco aesthetic influenced all creative areas - architecture, typography, fashion, music, paintings, sculpture, design and of course the furniture of the day.
1920s: Jazz Age And Flappers
Looking back at those times, as glamourised by films such as The Great Gatsby , the 20s seemed like a time of vast social change in society, plus a lot of fun. They don't call it the Jazz Age for nothing! Women's rights were slowly improving - female suffrage in the UK was 1918 and 1920 in the United States.
Art Deco Design Ethos - Great For Contemporary Interiors
The art deco look and feel when it comes to furniture design is one of clean lines and understated symmetry. Think of all those gorgeous art deco skyscrapers in New York (or in any other major city) where all the design lines are clean, angular and unfussy. This same principle is applied to the furniture design of the day - hence making it great for contemporary interiors.
Mix And Match With Other Styles:
Art deco furniture can look good in a room with various other pieces and styles - modernist furniture, English and French antiques, G Plan, Mid-Century , California Coastal, Hollywood Regency etc - which is why it's so popular for contemporary interiors and is a favourite with interior designers.
What Type Of Piece Do You Need?
We carry a whole range of art deco furniture, including:
Art Deco Desks Art Deco Console Tables Art Deco Chests Of Drawers Art Deco Dining Tables Art Deco Club Chairs Art Deco Cocktail Cabinets Art Deco Nightstands and Bedroom Furniture Art Deco Mirrored Furniture
Of course you can buy just one piece to mix in with your existing room / interior. Or we can work with you to source a whole room (or even house) if you are looking for a total 1920s theme. You'd want to of course match the woods up - quite a lot of our range comes in blonde walnut which has a lovely light finish and looks great against various colours. Of course if you are looking for matching decorative pieces and sculptures we have a large range of art deco bronzes of all shape and sizes. These also look great strategically placed amongst the furniture.
