Art deco furniture buying guide

One of the ways to make your home attractive is using art deco furniture. It creates a stark contrast and strong lines around the house to give it a more definitive look. Art deco furniture first emerged over a century ago and has re-emerged as a must-have in the home. Their popularity stems from careful craftsmanship and luxurious materials used to make them. So what are some of the things to look for when buying art deco furniture? Here is a suggestion of key points to consider:

1. Sharp Contrast

Most art deco furniture is in white, black, and metallic colours. Apart from creating a stark contrast, the furniture helps create a sense of symmetry in the home. Who doesn’t like the contrast created by colours such as white, black, and gold? Some furniture pieces may also feature jewel tones, and powdery pastels, especially the more exquisite kind.

2. Bold Geometry

Art Deco Bookcase

When it first came to the fore, art deco furniture sought to replicate geometric art from pioneers such as Picasso. As such, it lays emphasis on unusual forms and bold lines. Mostly this was dome on desks, chairs, and bookcases. By making use of similar shapes, art deco furniture is able to create standout geometric shapes. You will notice geometric shapes such as arches, sunbursts, triangles, and pyramids.

3. Exotic Materials

Art Deco Club chairs

At the height of its maturity, art deco furniture utilized imported exotic materials that were hard to come across. By and large, exotic materials such as pearl, mahogany, and ivory were used. Some even featured imported hides and furs. People who went for furniture made from exotic pieces were wealthy and didn’t like the mass-produced pieces. That made art deco furniture more expensive. Over the years, materials such as leather and faux fur have been used to make these furniture pieces more affordable.

4. Accents and Movements

Art deco design is largely futuristic in design. There’s an emphasis on artistic sculpture style that captures youth, technology, and speed. There’s an implication of movement even on large furniture pieces which have sleek curves and lines. Just look at bed frames and armchairs and you will find the signature semi-circles and curves of art deco furniture. In that subtle way, art deco furniture is able to capture a sense of movement and drama.

5. High Shine

One of the distinctive characteristics of art deco furniture is that it is glossy and shiny. Early forms of these design were made using Japanese lacquer, plate glass, and chrome, especially those in homes of the wealthy. While art deco furniture was made like that as some form of status symbol, these details have been retained in modern pieces. As such, the best pieces are those with mirror surfaces, given the classy way they look.

6. Ancient Inspiration

Art deco furniture may look modern and sleek but it borrows to a large extent from ancient art. Many of them borrow from ancient Egyptian art, especially from the tomb of King Tut. Thus it is not uncommon to notice reed and fan shapes in furniture backs and arms. It is also possible to see ziggurats from the Aztecs and Roman architecture influences as well.

As you can see, choosing art deco furniture isn’t straightforward, yet it is easy, especially if you thoroughly follow these  guidelines.
