Art deco hall tables are some of the most iconic pieces of furniture produced during that defining period. They were used either as console tables or hallway tables that held various pieces of art and decorations. But that isn’t the focus of this particular article. Instead, we intend to explain the unique characteristics that made the art deco style popular with furniture makers and homeowners in the early 20th century.

History of Art Deco

Art deco refers to a period when furniture makers and other artisans sought to make a break with the past by creating unique designs. The art deco movement is thought to have kicked off at the 20th century with an international exhibition held in Paris, France. However, the art deco period began around 1925, soon after the First World War, and continued into the Second World War.

Soon after the First World War, people were optimistic about the prospects for the future. Therefore, furniture makers sought to reflect this optimism by creating pieces of furniture with bold designs, vibrant colors, and progressive thinking. Art deco hall tables were among the furniture produced at that particular time.

The art deco style's popularity lasted until the onset of the Second World War when people started regarding it as lurid and extravagant. People wanted something to remind them of the somberness that had been brought about by the war. However, the style made a comeback in 1960, when people began appreciating the fine things of life once again.

Designers and Style Characteristics

Notable designers during the art deco era included Paul Mccobb, Arne Jacobsen, Milo Baughman, Jules Leleu, Paul Evans, Hans J. Wegner, and Gio Pinto. They created unique pieces of furniture that emphasized natural and geometric shapes.

Like other furniture made during that period, art deco hall tables had angular or symmetrical lines, creating a perfect balance. The tables also had long, smooth, sweeping curves in the legs and intricate wood inlays on the tabletop. As part of the decoration, furniture makers used prints, patterns, and bold colors, a complete departure from previous eras. Some of the most common decoration themes included sunbursts, stars, V-shapes, animals, and plants.
