Bronze Pixies

Bronze pixies were mainly used to decorate gardens in Victorian England. The reason bronze was preferred for making these items is that it is water resistant and unlikely to corrode. It withstands the ravages of the weather and can be used on water fountains. Bronze is an alloy of tin and copper and could also contain some zinc or lead. Although strong and durable, bronze is the best metal for capturing all the details in a casting mold. Bronze could also be used to mean brass, a zinc and copper alloy.

Bronze pixie fishing

The techniques for making bronze pixies were already being used in Europe from antiquity onwards. Some of the items that were produced using these techniques included decorations, weapons, tools, and sculpture. The Romans and Greeks had perfected the techniques of making the best statues from bronze. While there had been a couple of centuries when there was a lull, these techniques were picked up in the 15th century and used to create works of art across the continent.

To make bronze pixies, two main methods are used. The first is sand casting, which involves the use of fine, compact sand molds. After the casting is done, the sand mold would have served its purpose and is destroyed. The second method involves the use of wax molds. The wax mold could be used once and destroyed or could be reused over and over again.

How to Use Bronze Pixies

The main purpose of bronze pixies is to decorate your garden. During the Roman Empire, garden ornaments became a common thing. While many were made from bronze, others were carved from stone. Just like in those days, bronze pixies can be used to give your garden a unique look. Picture the contrast that would be created when the predominant greenery is viewed together with the bronze pixie.

But the best thing about bronze pixies is the antique look they will bring to your garden. You will choose between shapes such as birds, hedgehogs, majestic storks, and farmyard chicken. What more would you want than a sprinkling of pixies and fairies in your garden? Expect to impress the guests to your home with the best bronze pixies you can find anywhere.

How to Choose Bronze Pixies

One of the most important things to look out for in bronze pixies is whether they have the natural patinas of being beaten by the weather. Many of these statues have spent years in the open and have developed an attractive look you cannot find from items produced recently.

Don’t be deceived by recently produced bronze pixies which are likely to feature an artificial patina. To deceive buyers, the makers of these bronze statues usually apply these fake patinas on the surface. The artificial patinas could be applied through foundry chemical reactions or firing. Others are artistic in nature and are applied using waxes, varnishes, and colors.

So if you are looking for genuine bronze pixies, you need to know how to differentiate the natural and artificial patinas. You need to be careful that you are not conned. However, if you are buying a recently made bronze pixie, why not?
