What is a Pembroke table?

Ever seen a light table featuring two flaps on either side? Well, that’s exactly how to describe a Pembroke table. It is basically a drop-leaf table that you may use occasionally. Even though it is unclear where and how it originated, it is thought to have borrowed its name from the Earl of Pembroke, Henry Herbert. He lives between 1693 and 1751. As part of his work, Herbert was an amateur architect as well as a connoisseur.

What is not clear is how the table assumed the name Pembroke when it first became popular as the 18th century ended. Perhaps it is because Henry Herbert is the one who came up with the original design for this table. The preferred wood for these tables was mahogany. In terms of design, the table had a long drawer and two short ones. The legs were either tapered, turned or square.

In the 18th century, the Pembroke table took onto an oval shape when fully opened. It was decorated by painting or using a marquetry inlay. In 19th-century Victorian period, the table took on a rectangular shape. The wood was usually plain and polished instead of being painted.
What Would You Use A Pembroke Table For?
When it first emerged, the Pembroke table was considered a major innovation. Nothing like it has existed in previous centuries. Given the two flaps, it was versatile in terms of what one could use it for. For instance, it was used for writing, dining or serving tea. A favourite bedside table, this piece of furniture also served as an effective caster. After using it, one could easily fold it and tuck it away in a corner in any room. The table would stay there until the next time it was needed.
Other times, the Pembroke table would be used for dinner for one or two members of the family. In that case, one didn’t have to go to the dining room for dinner. The three draws were perfect when it came to storing various type of items. They would hold the smaller items that could not be kept on shelves and other storage spaces.
