'Dirty old river, must you keep rolling Flowing into the night? ' The Kinks 'Waterloo Sunset' (aware Waterloo is downstream)
This weeks edition is mainly dedicated to oil paintings. We lead with this gorgeous antique signed oil painting depicting the River Thames as it meanders through Henley-On-Thames (Oxfordshire). This piece - circa 1870 - makes me feel all nostalgic and whimsical. This picturesque town - with it's regatta - is such a beautiful part of the country as the Thames meanders before it enters the Capital aka the big smoke. A couple frolic on the river bank setting the scence for this bucolic idyl. We look down the river towards the Palladian bridge as our eyes are drawn right to the tower of St Mary's Church. 'Ahhhh', sighs deeply and inwardly. A prelasarian pre-internet Edenic pastoral when things seemed much better...
