On this day in 270 AD Valentine - a holy priest in Rome - was beheaded by Emperor Claudius II. Claudius had banned all marriages and engagements as they were viewed as keeping men from conscripting to the Roman army. Valentine defied Claudius and perfomed clandestine marriages for young lovers. He was discovered and hence had his head chopped off. Happy Valentines day everyone :)
Above we feature a wonderful hand carved marble statue of a sleeping beauty after Antonio Frilli. At five foot long she s almost lifesize and would make for a great garden sculpture.
