It's safe to say that at some point in the long arc of European history, one country would have had beef with another. Here we have in glorious needlepoint a large Flemish tapestry depicting the defeat of the Spanish army near the canal of Bruges (Belgium). This tapestry - as is often common - is based on the original painting by Charles Le Brun (French) 1619-1690. The craftmanship is astounding with noblemen on horseback, floral motifs and the army in the distance. The artist has really captured the energy and dynamism of the scene with great skill and we date this to circa 1890. Time to sit back with a Gulden Draak and enjoy the scene.
Below, another eclectic bumper edition of the quirky, humungous and at some times, frankly, odd items we have available. I'm opting for the Monteith silver plate champagne / punch bowl below this weekend, lovely bubbly :)
