The Gainsborough chair is one of the most recognisable forms of English antique seating, admired for its broad proportions, deep upholstery and elegant silhouette. Despite its association with eighteenth-century furniture, many people are surprised to learn that the chair was not actually designed by the artist Thomas Gainsborough. Instead, it owes its name to the celebrated English portrait painter because of the furniture that frequently appeared in his paintings.
